Train up a child in the way he should go...Prov. 22:6a
A Sword Drill is
an excellent way to bring in other verses about the lesson and it is
more interesting when the student takes part instead of you just
reading the verse.
For Sword Drills occasionally mix things up by picking the second, third, or fourth person to find the reference instead of the first. Have a different number in mind for each reference to keep the group guessing.
I am sure there are many variations to how a Sword Drill is conducted. Here are two ways that I like to use.
Formal Sword Drill: First, call out “Present Arms.” The class should hold up their Bibles with both hands, one hand on the front cover and one hand on the back with the Bible closed between their hands.
Next read the reference twice.
Finally say “Charge!” The first one to find it stands and waits for you to call on them before reading the verse. Also the student should have his finger or at least have his eyes on the verse before standing; not still be flipping pages has he starts to stand.
If the first student reads the wrong verse then go to the second person that has found it.
Informal Sword Drill: For this exercise I simply call out the verse and the first one to find it stands and reads it. I use this method a lot when I have other verses I want to bring into the lesson. Also I usually keep track of how many verses each one gets and announce the top scorers at the end of class.
Besides the Sword Drills listed here, many of the sheets in the Reference Sheets section can be used as Sword Drills also.
Keep Your Seat
Here is a new twist to having a Sword Drill. Have 2 chairs set up front.
Pick 2 students to start and have them sit in the chairs. Give a reference and whichever one finds it first gets to stay in the chair. Then pick someone else to go next. The object is to see who can keep their seat the longest.
You can combine this game with a lesson by choosing the Bible references along some theme such as verses about prayer, love, forgiveness, etc.
This drill will probably work best on an individual basis and not teams. You give familiar Bible references and let them quote the verse. You will have to give some thought to your age group and their general level of Bible knowledge. Here are a few suggestions to get you started.

Bible Books Sword Drill
This is an exercise to help the student learn where the books of the Bible are. Included is a reference from each of the sixty-six books. Divide into two teams. A point is awarded to the first team on which every member has found the verse.
Another way would be to simply call out the book and let them find the 1st verse of the 1st chapter of that book.
